Homework

"Reading volume is the best predictor of school success."

-Kylene Beers & Lucy Calkins

  • Reading a book/books of your choice every night, Monday through Thursday.

  • In addition to reading, students will have a reading or math assignment sent home on Monday. It will be due back each Thursday.

  • Students should spend a maximum of 30 minutes each night on homework. For example, if your child spends 20 minutes on a written assignment they should read for 10 more minutes to fulfill the 30 minutes on that night.

  • Occasional structured, long term projects.

Students will only earn credit for homework if their assignment is fully completed and returned to school on Thursday. This gives students an opportunity to bring missed assignments on Friday. No parent signatures are required for nightly reading. Missed homework assignments will be completed on Friday afternoon in school. If for any reason your child is struggling with an assignment, please contact me immediately so that we can work together to find a solution.

Basic Facts

In third grade, fact fluency is essential for student success. Mastery of basic facts takes time and hard work. To reach the goal of 80% or higher in multiplication and division, we encourage students to practice their facts at home in addition to school beginning in January. If you need flashcards or suggestions on how to practice, please contact me and I can provide you with additional resources. Students can also practice their facts using their Xtramath accounts.
